"Vivid Expressions" by Brena Patchen

Urban Light Studios & the Seattle Arts Coalition present:

Brena Patchen's
"Vivid Expressions"

FEATURING: Special Musical Guest - Loren Herrera!

Vivid Expressions is a culmination of works exploring visually striking and emotionally stirring aspects found in diverse inspirations from life: abandoned places, places travelled, glorious sunrises and glowing night skies, favorite songs, life experiences that have shaped our inner being. How do experiences like these make one feel when contemplating their reverence? What stirs within us? Can some form of beauty be unveiled within if we look hard enough? How does this help shape us?

Painter Brena Patchen uses oils and acrylics to contemplate fleeting, poetic moments in life that give us cause to pause and reflect. Her work can best be described as impressionistic, at times leaning towards abstract expressionism. A meditation in color, texture and mood serves as the uniting principle of her work, regardless of subject matter. It is her hope that viewing her artwork will cause you as much reverence as the act of painting the subject did for her.

Opening Reception:
Friday, 11 May 2018, 6-10pm

Greenwood's The BIG One Street Fair:

Encore Reception:

About the Artist:
Brena Patchen was grew up in California, where she received her degree in Art from U.C. Davis. She worked for many years in the banking industry, until she decided it was time to return to her artistic inclinations. She fell in love with the Seattle area while on her honeymoon and made a promise to herself that she would someday make this great city her home. Two years ago, that dream became a reality and she is now living and painting in the Greenwood neighborhood with her husband and two Maine coon cats. Her artwork has been displayed at A/NT Gallery in Seattle Center, as well as in several galleries in Northern California, and has also been showcased in multiple hotels and other local businesses in the both the Seattle and Northern California areas alike. In addition to being showcased at local art walks, pop-ups and festivals, Brena was also the featured live artist for both the Sacramento Art of Beer Festival as well as the Sacramento Wildland Fire Fighter Foundation Fundraiser. She painted live during each event, donating her finished pieces for the featured charity auction at the end of each evening. She feels blessed to now call Seattle her home, eagerly embracing the inspiration that draws from living within such a vibrant culture. She looks forward to seeing how the energy of this great city translates into her body of work and welcomes the imaginative journey ahead of her.

"Beautiful Refuge" by Odette Allen

Urban Light Studios & the Seattle Arts Coalition present:

Odette Allen's
"Beautiful Refuge"

Opening Reception:
Friday, 12 January 2018, 6-10pm

Encore Reception:
Friday, 9 February 2018, 6-10pm

About the show: “Beautiful Refuge”

Seattle has a reputation for outdoors culture and appreciation, but my dialog with the outdoors is a little different. I never go hiking. I hate camping. I am not “outdoorsy” at all. But I deeply love the natural elements of where we live. I find it comforting to orient myself by mountains and oceans or lakes.

Most importantly, being able to take a breath and look to the sky brings me peace when national politics or violence breaks my heart. Our environment becomes a place my heart can relax into and I can return to my higher self, my greater purpose. There is a romance and spirituality there that cannot be found elsewhere for me.

That sense of relief is really the crux of these pieces, they are about the solace to be found in our natural surroundings, and the romance of having a beautiful refuge for a moment, to remind myself to breathe.

About these pieces:

These paintings were created over the past year as I began to notice my relationship between seeing the sky and finding peace within myself. Each of these works shows a scene or a view that has lifted my heart. That sense of relief is really the crux of this work, they are about the solace to be found in our natural surroundings, and the romance of having a beautiful refuge for a moment, to remind myself to breathe.

Artist Statement:

Like so many artists, I was a troublesome child. My mother eventually found that if you gave me art supplies, I would cease to torture and destroy everything within reach. It is, sadly, all still true.

I am inspired by nature, landscapes, the need for justice, and the people who fight for equity. I am driven by a relentless need to create, which is now tempered by recognition of the scale of human struggle. Ultimately, I want to lend my talents to raising the voices of those in need.
